Patient Corner
The institute is one of the largest superspecialty tertiary care center for psychiatric illnesses, neurology and Neuro-Surgical illness.  Wide ranges of patient care services are available for treatment of patients.  The current bed strength of 282 patients is soon going to be increased to 500 with adequate provision of open wards, emergency ward and private ward facilities.  Integration of caregivers and family in the therapeutic programme is one of the key features of the institute’s treatment planning.

 

Outpatient Services:

Token Distribution Timing (Monday to Saturday) : 7:30 AM to 9:30 AM

New Registration - Monday to Saturday= 8.00 A.M to till last Token.

Old Registration - Monday to Saturday= 8.00 A.M to till last Token.

In-Patient Services:

The patients are housed in spacious wards. Recreational facilities are provided. Family members are encouraged to stay with the patients. Private room (AC/Non-AC) facility is also available.

    1. In-patient admission

  • Admissions to the hospital can be done on a voluntary or involuntary basis as per mental health laws and regulations of the country.
  • The duration of stay can vary depending on an individual patient’s need.
  • In-patient admission to psychiatry wards are done only when another relative/ family member or a close confidant is available to stay with the patient around the clock.
  • Once you/ your relative’s treating doctor decides to admit you, you will be sent to the admission counter to provide details and for payment, if required.
  •  Thereafter, you will be accompanied by an attender to the ward / room and received by nursing staff for further care.

    2. Hospital Stay

  • A team of psychiatrists, clinical psychologists, psychiatric social workers and psychiatric nurses will take care of you when you are admitted.
  • The consulting psychiatrist treating will see you on Consultant Rounds.
  • You will be seen by a senior resident and junior resident on a daily basis. Any clarifications can be held with the nursing staff or the junior resident. The Senior Resident (SR) directly supervises the junior resident. The Consultant is aware of all your details through the Junior Resident (JR) and Senior Resident.
  • Required physiotherapist and counselors will also be seeing you if required on a daily basis.
  • You may also be referred to various other departments and therapies depending on your need.

    3. Discharge process

  1. The discharge date is intimated by the treating doctor well in advance.
  2. You/ your relative will be given a discharge summary with all your treatment details and prescribed medications with follow up date and schedule.
  3. Any other therapies that require follow up on an out-patient basis will be intimated to you by the respective therapist.

Emergency Services: IHBAS Provides Emergency Services 24 hour and 7 days.The Institute offers 24 hours Emergency services in Psychiatry and Neurology . A 10 bedded Short Observation Facility(SOF) is available for patients of psychiatry and neurology. There is an emergency laboratory providing routine investigations facility.


Mental Health, Neurosciences & Allied sciences services are available at IHBAS. As IHBAS is not General Hospital  so these services are not available at IHBAS.

  1. Road Traffic accident, polu-trauma & emergency neurosurgery services.
  2. Gynecology, maternity care and general pediatric services.
  3. General medical, general surgical conditions TB & chest illnesses.
  4. Super specialty care in Cardiology, urology and endocrinology diseases.
  5. Eye, ENT, Skin, Dental and Orthopedic care.
  6. Mortuary services.


ICU :  Psychiatry & Neurology ICU is well equipped with advanced life support systems like ventilators, monitors and defibrillator.

Laboratory Services:

The laboratory is self-reliant and is capable of performing most of the routine investigations of blood, urine, sputum, CSF and therapeutic drug monitoring.

 

Specialized laboratory services available at IHBAS: Electrophysiology, IQ testing, DSA, muscle biopsy, Therapeutic drug monitoring services for antiepileptics (carbamazepine, phenytoin, valproic acid, phenobarbitone), Homocysteine and ammonia levels.


Sample collection

  • Samples from wards are being directly received in the labs.
  • OPD sample collection timings are from 9:00AM to 2:00PM on all working weekdays and 9:00AM to 1:00PM on Saturday. Emergency samples received throughout working hours directly in the labs.

Sample processing and dispatch of reports

  • Samples are processed and reports dispatched same day by 3.30PM. Reports of OPD patients sent to Reception Counter same day by 3.30PM.

Quality assurance

  • All investigations carried out in the labs have their operating procedures well defined, standardized and checked from time to time.
  • All labs participate in internal and external quality assurance programme.

Occupational Therapy and Day Care Centre: Facilities of day care, occupational and Physiotherapy are available at OT Block in the Institute between 9 AM and 4 PM on all working days.


 Consultation - liaison Services: Institute has developed consultation- liaison services linkage with the University College of Medical Sciences and Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for consultation from specialists.


Accommodation for patient's Relatives:


Dharmashala : Rooms for stay of Patients' relatives available in Dharmashala.


 New Initiatives for Expansion and strengthening of Patient care Services.


Institute continuously looks for ways to upgrade its facilities for the patients' care and comfort. In the last couple of years, the hospital underwent innovations in few key locations and few new units were set up to provide specialized services for patients.


In house round the clock CT scan facility :

 IHABS has its in house round the clock CT scan facility serving to the needs of the patients round the clock.


Blood Storage Unit :  It is a big supportive service for the neurosurgery services. Blood Storage Unit (BSU) came into existence on 9th October, 2012. It operates from 9.00am- 4.00pm on all working days. BSU has been licensed and approved by Assistant Drugs Controller for storage of whole human blood and packed red blood cells (PRBCs). Regional Blood Transfusion Centre, G.T.B. Hospital is the mother blood bank from which blood bags are procured as per requirement. BSU provides high quality services with the objective of providing safe whole blood to all needy patients. At the same time strong emphasis is on maintaining quality at each step from blood procurement to blood issue while adhering to standards laid down in drug and cosmetics rules. BSU is a strong supportive unit to the Neurosurgery services at IHBAS.


Emergency laboratory services :   Emergency laboratory services were started in May 2010. This new addition allows the diagnostic facilities to be available to the patients beyond the routine working hours. The laboratory is engaged in providing high quality diagnostic services. To achieve this, it has an active participation in external quality assurance programme run by CMC Vellore in clinical biochemistry and by AIIMS in hematology.


Mother and Child care Unit: Mother and Child Unit has been started by the Institute to cater to Homeless, Young, Mentally ill mother with 05 bedded facility.


Child and Adolesent psychiatric  Indoor Services: Institute has a specialized Child and Adolescent Psychiatry ward which is 10 bedded and Child de-addiction ward 05 bedded facility.


Intensive care Unit: Psychiatry ICU first of its kind in India with 1:1 staff Patient ratio for better observation, monitoring and care of High risk patients. Presently Psychiatry ICU 05 bedded, Neurology ICU 10 bedded and Neurosurgery ICU 02 bedded.


Short Observation Facility:   Institute has a new modernized Emergency Block with 15 bedded Short observation facilities for acute emergencies.
